Routine

In an age in which notifications constantly pop up from a suite of social media applications, it is a challenge in our daily lives to sit in silence and focus on a single task. The Routine Series is an attempt to wield control over the artist’s busy life as a mother and full-time employee. Routine is not a drag but a necessary regimen that propels us forward into the days which will eventually compose our entire lives. Routine saves and it should be celebrated. For Yaya, her Routine daily drawings are a burst from the humdrum of the quotidian. Often involving a cup of a coffee or a morning metro ride, she captures the ritualistic start to her day wherever she is around the world. These pieces are almost exclusively done watercolor or india on paper in a notebook, spare sheets and a foldout book. All are done sur place, to keep the artist in the present moment.
